Selected Course Descriptions
Mathematics Department
- Pre-Algebra (1 credit)
This course lays the foundation for the study of Algebra. Topics include the study of integers, solving and graphing equations and inequalities, operations with rational numbers and polynomials, proportion, statistics, probability, and applying algebra to geometry and right triangles.
- Honors Algebra (1 credit)
Topics include geometric relationships, similarity, radicals, polynomials, factoring, logic, probability, coordinate geometry, statistics, transformations, word problems, locus, quadratic equations, trigonometry and basic constructions.
Pre-requisite: 80% grade on Archdiocesan Honors Algebra Exam in 8th grade.
This course culminates in the Math A Regents Exam.
- Algebra (1 credit)
Topics include working with real numbers, equations, polynomials; fractions, functions, linear equations, inequalities, rational and irrational numbers and quadratic functions.
Preparation for the Math A Regents Exam will be an integral part of the course.
- Geometry (1 credit)
This course is based on the New York State Regents curriculum. The topics include: Logic, triangles, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, geometry transformations, properties of real numbers, quadratic equations, the parabola, geometric constructions and probability and combinatorics. This course culminates in the Math A Regents Exam.
Pre-Requisite: 65% or higher in Algebra
- Honors Geometry (1 credit)
This course continues the Math A Regents curriculum with emphasis on related geometry and trigonometry topics. This course is designated for students who have successfully completed Honors Algebra.
Pre-Requisite: 65% or higher in Honors Algebra and no less than 75% on the Math A Regents Exam.
- Honors Intermediate Algebra and Trigonometry (1 credit)
Topics include those for Intermediate Algebra and additional topics in Trigonometry not included on the Math A Regents Exam. This course prepares the students for the Math B Regents Exam.
Pre-Requisite: 75% or higher on the Math A Regents Exam.
- Intermediate Algebra (1 credit)
This course covers all algebraic concepts necessary for advancement into more sophisticated mathematics classes. Topics include: Basic Definitions and Properties; Equations in One and Two Variables; Inequalities; Rational Expressions; Rational Exponents and Roots; Quadratic Equations; Systems of Equations; and Exponential and Logarithmic Functions. Problem solving techniques will also be demonstrated. Additional topics may be covered if time permits.
Pre-Requisite: 65% in Sequential III or Geometry.

Advanced Intermediate Algebra (1 Credit)
This course is available to Seniors who successfully completed Intermediate Algebra or Pre-calculus in Junior year but do not qualify for Pre-Calculus or College Math. Topics will include sequences and series, Matrices, Trigonometric Functions and Applications and Analytic Geometry.
Pre-Requisite: 65% or higher in Intermediate Algebra
- Precalculus (1 credit)
This course is designed for qualified students from Course III or Intermediate Algebra who want to develop the skills necessary to study calculus and advanced mathematics courses; topics include: Equations of degree greater than 2, Functions and Graphs, Sequences and Series, Exponents and Logarithms, Matrices, Trigonometric Functions and Applications, Analytic Geometry.
Pre-Requisite: 65% or higher of Sequential III Math Regents or 85% or higher in Intermediate Algebra.
- College Math (1 credit)
- Intro to College Math I (1003)
The first semester of this college course covers a review of real numbers, exponents, polynomials, rational fractions, equations, inequalities, systems functions, coordinate geometry, limits and basic differential calculus.
- Intro to College Math II (1004)
The second semester continues limits, continuity, differentiations of algebraic, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions and applications of differentiation.
Pre-requisite: For college credit; 75% or higher on Math B regents Exam, or 80% in Pre-Calculus, or 95% in Intermediate Algebra and a composite score of 1000 on the SAT, departmental approval is required. College credit from St. John’s University may be received. A fee would be charged by the university.
