Selected Course Descriptions
Guidance Department
The Guidance Department program consists of counseling services (group and individual) consultation services for all students, and informational services (career, vocational, and college). To assist with these services, the guidance department has an extensive library of catalogues, videos, financial aid forms, scholarship data, occupational information, and other vital information. The students are encouraged to utilize these services with the counselors and for additional means of exploring opportunities and making decisions regarding future plans and goals.
- Freshman Year Guidance ( Required ¼ credit)
The freshman guidance course is designed to help students make a smooth transition from junior high into the high school setting. This will be done by having group discussions on such topics as: time management, self esteem, peer relations, and teacher/student relations. The topics covered (but not limited to) are the following: developing positive, healthy relationships, decision making, development of study skills, and teen pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases.
To reach these objectives various methods will be employed: Group discussions, videos, role playing, and several guest speakers.

Sophomore Year Guidance (Required ¼ credit)
The sophomore guidance course is designed for students to have a better self understanding and learn how to make appropriate decisions for the future. The topics covered (but not limited to) are the following: Women’s health, sexually transmitted diseases, domestic violence and date rape prevention, eating disorders, self esteem development, career searching, and The Explorer Program (developed by The Boy Scouts of America to bring high school students into the business world through workshops, seminars, and internships).
To reach these objectives various methods will be employed: Group discussions, videos, role playing, and several guest speakers.

Junior Year Guidance (1/4 credit)
The junior guidance course is designed for students to have a better understanding about themselves, their career goals, and college choices. The topics covered (but not limited to) are the following: registration and preparation for the PSAT and the SAT I, developments of a resume and cover letter, pros and cons of going away to college and determining what kind of college best suits the student; size, location, style, etc.
To reach these objectives various methods will be employed: Group discussions, videos, role playing, and several guest speakers.
- Senior Year Guidance (Required, ¼ credit)
The senior guidance course is designed for students to continue the material began in junior year but in much more depth. Emphasis is placed on applying to college, the financial aid, scholarship exploration, and handling college life situations.
To reach these objectives various methods will be employed: Group discussions, several guest speakers, and role playing.
- Peer Counseling
During the Spring of preceding year, 25-30 juniors and seniors are selected to become peer counselors by the returning peer counselors and the peer counseling advisors (with approval of the school administration). Training sessions will begin at the end of the school year and a retreat will take place in the Fall for all peer counselors. Once a month, there will be follow up training sessions.
Peer counselors will meet their assigned freshmen once per cycle during the first semester and once every second cycle in the second semester. Peer counselors will meet their assigned advisor once every second cycle year round. Peer counselors will notify the advisor immediately of any crisis situation.
