The Mother Cabrini High School Drum Corps was founded in 1959 by Mother George and Mother Gervase to provide an efficient marching and playing unit for the girls of Mother Cabrini High School. The Corps performs in many parades in New York City and in the tri-state area throughout the year. The Corps participated in the dedication of the statue of Mother Cabrini in the Hall of American Saints at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, and has performed at many special celebrations.
The Drum Corps is under the direction of George Peragine. The Corps is known far and wide for its marching and playing abilities; has won the WPIX Trophy for Best Marching Band in the 5th Avenue St. Patrick's Day Parade over 20 times, as well as other numerous awards.
Membership in the Corps is an honor. It takes commitment, dedication, and hard work to achieve the status of "regular." But the end result is a Corps that brings pride to every member, every Cabrini girl, the Alumnae and the Faculty.
On enrolling in the Corps, a girls status is "replacement," and her rank is "cadet." When she has learned all the pieces in the parade routine, she becomes a "regular" with the rank of "lance corporal." Further advancement in rank depends on ability, leadership potential, and extra service. Members of the Corps (but not the Color Guard) receive one-half regents credit for every year in the Corps.
Girls with piano training are encouraged to enroll in the Bell Section. However, to be a member of any section of the Corps, you need not have previous training: you will be taught as you go. Prospective members of the Color Guard will be interviewed.
Normally, a replacement may expect to perform with the Corps at the end of her first year, or the beginning of her second. However, any girl who displays exceptional ability will be advanced sooner. Any girl in the school may enroll for training.
Many of our Alumnae state that being a member of the Corps was one of the most meaningful aspects of their high school experience. Corps members become not just a unit but a family, and they learn to work collaboratively to achieve their goals.
